Zuni Fetish Carvings

A fetish is a carved object representing an animal or Being revered by the people who use it. Original fetishes derived from rocks whose natural shapes suggested the creature. As fashioning became popular, natural materials were worked, and bears , mountain lions, moles, and snakes came to life at the hands of the artisan. Pieces of amber, ivory, shell, jet and turquoise were transformed into "power animals" and other beneficent figures. These allies were then called upon to ensure fertility, protection, and adequate rainfall. Prey animals were used in hunting and corn maidens would bring an abundant crop.

The Zuni Indians of New Mexico emerged as the premier carvers. Their skillful craftsmanship earned the respect of neighboring tribespeople who prized the Zuni fetish for its power and beauty.

The art of Zuni fetish carving is now enjoying a revival. Rekindled interest has inspired a wide variety of carvings by a number of different carvers. Individual artists are becoming well-known and fine pieces are becoming collectible. This appreciation creates freedom and flexibility for the Zuni carvers, and the result is an increasing number of ever finer fetishes.
